Al-Zuhri said: It has reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not divide spoils for anyone absent from a battle except on the day of Khaybar, when he divided for the absent people of al-Hudaybiyah because Allah had given Khaybar to the Muslims of al-Hudaybiyah, saying: 'Allah has promised you much spoils that you will take, and He hastened this for you' [Al-Fath 20]. It belonged to the people of al-Hudaybiyah, whether they were present or absent, and to those of others who were present. Al-Zuhri said: It has also reached us that the Prophet divided for Uthman ibn Affan on the day of Badr, though Uthman had stayed behind with his wife Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, who had measles. Zayd ibn Harithah came with news of the victory at Badr while Uthman was burying Ruqayyah. Al-Zuhri said: It reached us that the Messenger of Allah also divided for Talhah ibn Ubaydullah and Sa'id ibn Zayd, who were both absent in Syria. The shaykh said: We narrated from Ibn Ishaq that no one was absent from Khaybar among the people of al-Hudaybiyah except Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari. As for the division for Uthman and others from the spoils of Badr, evidence has been established in this book that the spoils of Badr belonged to the Messenger of Allah to place where Allah directed him. The spoils became the right of those who witnessed the battle only after the division of Badr. And Allah knows best.
