Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) narrated: On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'What do you say about these prisoners?' Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are your people and your origin. Spare them and seek their repentance; perhaps Allah will accept their repentance.' Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they denied you and expelled you. Bring them forward and strike their necks.' Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley with plenty of firewood. Set the valley ablaze upon them, then throw them in.' The Messenger of Allah was silent and did not respond. Then he went inside. Some people said he would follow Abu Bakr's opinion, others said Umar's, and others said Ibn Rawahah's. Then the Messenger of Allah came out and said: 'Allah softens the hearts of some men until they become softer than milk, and Allah hardens the hearts of some men until they become harder than stones. Your example, O Abu Bakr, is like Ibrahim who said: Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me - then You are Forgiving and Merciful. Your example, O Abu Bakr, is like Isa who said: If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise [Al-Ma'idah 118]. Your example, O Umar, is like Musa who said: Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment [Yunus 88]. Your example, O Umar, is like Nuh who said: My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any inhabitant from among the disbelievers [Nuh 26]. You are in need, so let none of them escape except through ransom or by striking the neck.' Ibn Mas'ud said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, except Suhayl ibn Bayda', for I heard him mention Islam.' The Messenger of Allah was silent, and I never feared on any day that stones would fall upon me from the sky more than on that day, until the Messenger of Allah said: 'Except Suhayl ibn Bayda'.' Then Allah revealed: 'It is not for a prophet to have captives' [Al-Anfal 67] to the end of the three verses.
