Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us: Sufyan said: I heard Ibn al-Munkadir narrating that he heard Jabir saying: I fell ill, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to visit me, he and Abu Bakr, walking. I had become unconscious and could not speak to him. He performed ablution and poured the water on me, and I regained consciousness. I said: O Messenger of Allah, how should I dispose of my wealth? I have sisters. So the verse of inheritance was revealed: 'They ask you for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah' [4:176] - one who has no children but has sisters. In Shu'bah's narration from Ibn al-Munkadir from Jabir in this hadith, he said: Only distant relatives (kalalah) will inherit from me, so he named those who would inherit from him as kalalah, and this has been mentioned previously. The Shaykh said: Jabir ibn Abdullah, regarding whom the verse of kalalah was revealed, had no child and no parent, because his father was killed on the day of Uhud as a martyr, and this verse was revealed after that.
