Muhammad ibn Abi Adi told us, from Ibn Awn, from Muhammad, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed one of the two afternoon prayers - Abu Hurayrah remembered it but Muhammad forgot which one - and he prayed two rak'ahs then gave the closing greeting, then went to a piece of wood laid across the mosque and put his hand on it as if angry, and the quick-tempered people left through the doors of the mosque saying: "The prayer has been shortened." Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they were too in awe of him to speak to him. Among the people was a man with long hands called Dhul-Yadayn, who said: "O Messenger of Allah, did you forget, or was the prayer shortened?" He said: "I did not forget, and the prayer was not shortened." He said: "Is it as Dhul-Yadayn says?" They said: "Yes." So he came forward and prayed what he had left out, then gave the closing greeting, then said the takbir and prostrated like his usual prostration or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir. Muhammad used to be asked, then he would say: "I was informed that Imran ibn Husayn said: 'Then he gave the closing greeting.'"
