Waki' narrated to us: al-A'mash narrated from Zayd ibn Wahb from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah from Abdullah ibn Amr who said: I was sitting with him in the shade of the Ka'bah while he was narrating to the people. He said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a journey and we stopped at a campsite. Some of us were pitching their tents, some were tending their livestock, and some were practicing archery, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called out: 'Prayer in congregation!' I reached him while he was addressing the people, saying: 'O people, there was no prophet before me except that it was his duty to guide his nation to what he knew was good for them and to warn them of what he knew was evil for them. Indeed, the well-being of this nation is in its beginning, and its later generations will be afflicted with trials and tribulations, each one making the next seem insignificant. A tribulation will come and the believer will say: This is my destruction. Then it will pass. Then another will come and he will say: This is it, this is it. Then it will pass. Then another will come and he will say: This is it, this is it. Then it will pass. Whoever would love to be removed from the Fire and admitted into Paradise, let death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people as he would like to be treated. Whoever pledges allegiance to a leader, giving him the grasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as much as he can' - and he said on one occasion: 'as much as he is able.'" When I heard that, I pushed my head between two men and said: "Your cousin Mu'awiyah commands us (unjustly)." He placed his fist on his forehead, then bowed his head, then raised it and said: "Obey him in obedience to Allah and disobey him in disobedience to Allah." I said to him: "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it." Isma'il ibn Umar Abu al-Mundhir narrated to us: Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Abi al-Safar narrated from al-Sha'bi from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah al-Sa'idi who said: I saw a gathering near the Ka'bah and sat with them, and there was a man narrating to them, and it was Abdullah ibn Amr. He said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a journey and stopped at a campsite" - and he mentioned the hadith.
