حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنِ الْحُرِّ بْنِ الصَّيَّاحِ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ الْخَمِيسَ مِنْ أَوَّلِ الشَّهْرِ وَالِاثْنَيْنِ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ وَالِاثْنَيْنِ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ.

Hajjaj told us, Sharik told us, from al-Hurr ibn al-Sayyah: I heard Ibn Umar say: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to fast three days from every month: Thursday at the start of the month, and the Monday following it, and the Monday following that.
