Mu'adh told us, Ibn 'Awn told us, who said: I wrote to Nafi' asking him whether the call to Islam was made before fighting. He wrote back to me: "That was in the early days of Islam. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, raided the Banu al-Mustaliq while they were unaware, and their livestock were being watered, so he killed their fighting men and took their captives, and on that day he obtained Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith." And 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar related this hadith to me, and he was in that army.
