Al-Hajjaj told us, Sharik informed us, from al-Rukayn ibn al-Rabi', from al-Qasim ibn Hassan, from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Horses are of three kinds: a horse for the Merciful, a horse for man, and a horse for Satan. As for the horse of the Merciful, it is the one tethered in the path of Allah - its fodder, its dung, and its urine [count as good deeds] - and he mentioned what Allah willed. As for the horse of Satan, it is the one gambled or wagered upon. As for the horse of man, it is the horse a man keeps, seeking benefit from its offspring/produce, and it shields him from poverty." Mu'awiyah ibn Amr told us, Za'idah told us, al-Rukayn told us, from Abu Amr al-Shaybani, from a man among the Ansar, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Horses are of three kinds," and he related the rest of the hadith.
