Yazid told us, Hammad ibn Salamah informed us, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas ibn Malik, from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "The last one to enter Paradise will be a man who walks along the Path, sometimes falling face-down and sometimes walking, while the Fire touches him once. When he has crossed the Path, he turns to look at it and says: 'Blessed is He who saved me from you; Allah has given me what He has not given to anyone among the first and the last.' Then a tree will be raised up before him, and he will look at it and say: 'O Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.' He will say: 'O My servant, perhaps if I bring you near it you will ask Me for something else.' He will say: 'No, O Lord,' and he will make a covenant with Allah that he will not ask Him for anything else. Yet the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, knows that he will ask Him, because He sees that he has no patience over it, so He brings him near it. Then another tree, more beautiful than the first, will be raised up before him, and he will say: 'O Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.' He will say: 'O My servant, did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He will say: 'O Lord, this one — I will not ask You for anything else,' and he makes a covenant with Him, while the Lord knows that he will ask Him for something else. So He brings him near it. Then a tree will be raised up before him at the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the others, and he will say: 'Lord, bring me near to this tree; I will take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.' He will say: 'O My servant, did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He will say: 'O Lord, this tree — I will not ask You for anything else,' and he makes a covenant with Him, while the Lord knows that he will ask Him for something else, because He sees that he has no patience over it. So He brings him near it, and he hears the voices of the people of Paradise, and he says: 'O Lord, Paradise! Paradise!' He will say: 'My servant, did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He will say: 'O Lord, admit me into Paradise.' Then He, Mighty and Majestic, will say: 'What will satisfy you from Me, O My servant? Would it please you if I gave you the like of the whole world, and its like along with it?' He will say: 'Are You mocking me, while You are the Lord of Might?' He said: Abdullah laughed until his molars showed, then said: 'Will you not ask me why I laughed?' They said to him: 'Why did you laugh?' He said: 'Because of the laughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.' Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to us: 'Will you not ask me why I laughed?' They said: 'Why did you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Because of the laughter of the Lord when He said: Are you mocking Me, while I am the Lord of Might?'"
