Rawh narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hafsah narrated to us, al-Zuhri narrated to us, from Safwan ibn Abdullah, that Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf was told: "Whoever does not emigrate will perish." He said: So I said, "I will not return to my family until I go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." I mounted my camel and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, they claim that whoever does not emigrate will perish." He said: "Not so, O Abu Wahb. Return to the valleys of Makkah." He said: While I was sleeping, a thief came and took my garment from under my head. I caught him and brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "This man stole my garment." He ordered that his hand be cut. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is not what I wanted. It is a charity upon him (I give it to him)." He said: "Why not before you brought him to me?"
