Abu Kamil narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, Ibn Shihab narrated to us - and Ya'qub said: my father narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab - from Kharijah ibn Zayd ibn Thabit, from Umm al-Ala' al-Ansariyyah, and she was one of their women. Ya'qub said: she informed him that she gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). She said: Uthman ibn Maz'un was assigned to us by lot when the Ansar drew lots for the housing of the Muhajirun. Umm al-Ala' said: Uthman ibn Maz'un fell ill at our place, and we nursed him until he died, and we wrapped him in his shrouds. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered upon us, and I said: "May the mercy of Allah be upon you, O Abu al-Sa'ib. I bear witness that Allah has honored you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "How do you know that Allah has honored him?" She said: I said, "I do not know, may my father and mother be your ransom." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "As for him, certainty from his Lord has come to him, and I hope for good for him. By Allah, I do not know - and I am the Messenger of Allah - what will be done with me." Ya'qub said: "with him." She said: "By Allah, I will never vouch for anyone after him." That grieved me, and I slept and was shown a flowing spring for Uthman. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him of that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "That is his good deeds." Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Kharijah ibn Zayd, who said: Umm al-Ala' al-Ansariyyah used to say: "When the Muhajirun came to Madinah, the Ansar drew lots for their housing, and Uthman ibn Maz'un was assigned to us." She mentioned the hadith except that he said: "I do not know - and I am the Messenger of Allah - what will be done with me or with you."
