حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَهْمِ سَمِعْتُ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ قَيْسٍ قَالَتْ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَحْلَلْتِ فَآذِنِينِي فَآذَنَتْهُ فَخَطَبَهَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَأَبُو الْجَهْمِ وَأُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَّا مُعَاوِيَةُ فَرَجُلٌ تَرِبٌ لَا مَالَ لَهُ وَأَمَّا أَبُو الْجَهْمِ فَرَجُلٌ ضَرَّابٌ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَلَكِنْ أُسَامَةَ قَالَ فَقَالَتْ بِيَدِهَا هَكَذَا أُسَامَةُ تَقُولُ لَمْ تُرِدْهُ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَاعَةُ اللَّهِ وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِهِ خَيْرٌ لَكِ فَتَزَوَّجَتْهُ فَاغْتَبَطَتْهُ.

Waki' told us, from Sufyan, who heard it from Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Jahm: I heard Fatimah bint Qays say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "When your waiting period ends, inform me." So she informed him. Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, Abu al-Jahm, and Usamah ibn Zayd proposed to her, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "As for Mu'awiyah, he is a poor man with no wealth; and as for Abu al-Jahm, he is a man who beats women a great deal; but Usamah..." She said, gesturing with her hand like this, "Usamah?" - meaning she did not want him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her, "Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for you." So she married him and found happiness with him.
