Ya'qub narrated to us: My father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Sulayman ibn Suhaym narrated to me, from Umayyah bint Abi al-Salt, from a woman of Banu Ghifar - and she named her to me - who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with a group of women of Banu Ghifar, and we said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, we would like to go out with you on this expedition of yours" - it was heading toward Khaybar - "so that we may treat the wounded and help the Muslims as much as we are able." He said, "With Allah's blessing." She said: So we went out with him, and I was a young girl, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seated me behind him on the rear of his saddle. She said: By Allah, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dismounted at dawn, he made his camel kneel, and I got down from the rear of his saddle, and there was blood from me on it - it was the first menstruation I had ever experienced. She said: So I shrank back toward the she-camel, feeling ashamed. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw my condition and saw the blood, he said, "What is the matter with you - perhaps you have begun menstruating?" She said: I said, "Yes." He said, "Then put yourself in order, take a vessel of water, put salt in it, and wash what blood has gotten on the saddle-cover, then return to your mount." She said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, conquered Khaybar, he granted us a share from the spoils, and he took this necklace that you see on my neck and gave it to me, placing it with his own hand around my neck - by Allah, it will never leave me. He said: And it remained around her neck until she died, and she had instructed that it be buried with her, so that she never became pure from a menstrual period without putting salt in her purification water, and she instructed that salt be put in her ghusl-water when she died.
