'Ali ibn 'Asim narrated to us, he said: Husayn narrated to us, from Abu Wa'il, from Masruq, from Umm Ruman, she said: While I was with 'A'ishah, a woman of the Ansar entered upon us and said: May Allah do such-and-such to her son and such-and-such. 'A'ishah said: Why? She said: He was among those who spread the story. 'A'ishah said: And what story? She said: Such-and-such. She said: Has this reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? She said: Yes, and it has reached Abu Bakr. She said: Yes. She said: So 'A'ishah collapsed unconscious, and she did not recover except with a shivering fever upon her. She said: So I got up and covered her. She said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered and said: What is the matter with her? She said: I said, O Messenger of Allah, a shivering fever has seized her. He said: Perhaps it is because of a story that has been spread about her. She said: So 'A'ishah sat up straight for him and said: By Allah, if I swear to you, you will not believe me, and if I make excuse to you, you will not excuse me; my case and yours is like the case of Jacob and his sons: {And Allah is the One sought for help against what you describe}. She said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out. He said: And Allah sent down her acquittal, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned, with Abu Bakr accompanying him, and entered and said: O 'A'ishah, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has sent down your acquittal. She said: By the praise of Allah, not by your praise. She said: Abu Bakr said to her: Are you saying this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? She said: Yes. She said: Among those who spread the story was a man whom Abu Bakr used to support, so Abu Bakr swore that he would not maintain ties with him. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: {And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give}, to the end of the verse. Abu Bakr said: Yes indeed, and he resumed supporting him.
