Ya'qub narrated to us: My father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Yahya ibn Abbad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father, from Aisha, wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: When they wanted to wash the body of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, they disagreed about it, saying, "By God, we do not know how to proceed - should we strip the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, as we strip our dead, or should we wash him with his clothes still on him?" She said: When they disagreed, God cast drowsiness upon them, until, by God, there was not a man among the people but his chin was on his chest, asleep. She said: Then someone spoke to them from a corner of the house, without them knowing who it was, saying, "Wash the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with his clothes on him." She said: So they rushed to him and washed the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was in his shirt, with water and lote-tree leaves poured over him, and the men rubbing him through the shirt. And she used to say, "Had I known in hindsight what I later came to know, none but his wives would have washed the body of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him."
