Aisha reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about the plague. He told me that it is a punishment that Allah sends upon whom He wills, and Allah has made it a mercy for the believers. Any servant who is in a land where the plague breaks out and remains there patiently, knowing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has decreed for him, will receive the reward of a martyr.
