Al-Aswad said: I said to Aisha: "Tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." She said: He would sleep during the first part of the night and rise during the latter part. When he got up, he would perform ablution and pray what Allah decreed for him. If he needed his wife, he would go to her; otherwise, he would turn to his bed. If he had been with his wife, he would sleep as he was without touching water. When the first adhan (for Fajr) was called, he would spring up — and by Allah, she did not say 'stand up' — and if he was in a state of janabah, he would pour water over himself — and by Allah, she did not say 'bathe' — and perform ablution for prayer, then pray two rak'ahs and go out to the mosque.
