Aisha reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr, and a man from among the polytheists followed him and caught up with him at al-Jamrah. He said, "I wish to follow you and take part with you." He said, "Do you believe in Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger?" He said, "No." He said, "Go back, for we will never seek help from a polytheist." Then he caught up with him again at ash-Shajarah, and the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were pleased at this, for he was strong and vigorous. He said, "I have come to follow you and take part with you." He said, "Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?" He said, "No." He said, "Go back, for I will never seek help from a polytheist." Then he caught up with him again when he came out upon al-Bayda, and said the same to him. He said, "Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?" He said, "Yes." So he went out with him.
