Ali ibn Asim narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Umar ibn Qays, from Muhammad ibn al-Ash'ath, from A'ishah, who said: "While I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a man from among the Jews sought permission [to enter], and he was permitted. He said: 'al-Samu alayka' [death be upon you].' The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Wa alayka' [and upon you].'" She said: "I was about to speak." She said: "Then he entered a second time and said the same, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Wa alayka.'" She said: "Then he entered a third time and said: 'al-Samu alayka.'" She said: "So I said: 'Rather, death be upon you and the curse of Allah, brothers of monkeys and pigs! Do you greet the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with a greeting Allah did not greet him with?'" She said: "He looked at me and said: 'Enough! Indeed Allah does not love obscenity nor indecency. They said something, and we returned it upon them, and nothing harmed us, and it remains upon them until the Day of Resurrection. They do not envy us for anything as they envy us for the day of Friday, to which Allah guided us while they went astray from it, and for the qiblah, to which Allah guided us while they went astray from it, and for our saying "Amin" behind the imam.'"
