Muhammad b. Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi told us, saying: Hisham b. Urwah told us, from his father, from Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never struck a servant of his, nor a woman of his, nor did he ever strike with his hand, except when striving in the way of Allah. Nothing was ever taken from him for which he took revenge on the one responsible, except when the sacred limits of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, were violated, in which case he would take revenge for the sake of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He was never presented with two matters, one of them easier than the other, but he chose the easier of the two, unless it was sinful; and if it were sinful, he was the furthest of people from it.
