Abbad b. Abbad told us, from Hisham b. Urwah, from his father, from Aishah, who said: The day of Ashura' was a day the Quraysh used to fast in the pre-Islamic era, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast it. When he came to Madinah, he fasted it and commanded that it be fasted. When the obligation of the month of Ramadan was revealed, Ramadan became the one that was fasted, and the day of Ashura' was left; so whoever wished could fast it, and whoever wished could break it.
