حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو هَانِئٍ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَمْرَو بْنَ مَالِكٍ الْجَنْبِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.

Ali bin Ishaq narrated to us, who said: Abdullah, that is Ibn al-Mubarak, informed us, who said: Haywah bin Shurayh informed us, who said: Abu Hani' al-Khawlani informed us, that he heard Amr bin Malik al-Janbi say: I heard Fadalah bin Ubayd say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: The one who strives is the one who strives against his own soul in the way of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
