Mahmud b. Labid, of Banu Abd al-Ashhal, related: When Abu al-Haysar Anas b. Rafi' came to Makkah, accompanied by young men of Banu Abd al-Ashhal, among them Iyas b. Mu'adh, seeking an alliance from Quraysh against their people the Khazraj, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard of them, came, and sat with them. He said to them, "Would you like something better than what you have come for?" They said, "What is that?" He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah; He has sent me to His servants to call them to worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him, and a Book has been revealed to me." Then he spoke of Islam and recited the Qur'an to them. Iyas b. Mu'adh, who was a young lad, said, "O my people, this, by Allah, is better than what you have come for!" Abu Julays Anas b. Rafi' then took a handful of gravel and struck Iyas b. Mu'adh in the face with it, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, rose and left them, and they returned to Madinah. Then the battle of Bu'ath took place between al-Aws and al-Khazraj. Iyas b. Mu'adh did not live long after that before he died. Mahmud b. Labid said: Those of my people who were present at his death told me that they never ceased hearing him proclaim the oneness of Allah, magnify Him, praise Him, and glorify Him until he died, so that they had no doubt he had died a Muslim - he had indeed embraced Islam within his heart in that very gathering when he heard what he heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
