Waki' narrated to us, Quraysh ibn Hayyan narrated to us, from Abu Wasil, who said: I met Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and he shook my hand and saw that my nails were long, and he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: One of you asks about news of the heavens while he leaves his nails like the claws of a bird, in which uncleanness, filth, and dirt collect. Waki' did not say once 'al-Ansari.' Someone else said it was Abu Ayyub al-'Ataki. Abu Abd al-Rahman said: My father said: His tongue slipped ahead of him — meaning Waki' — so he said 'I met Abu Ayyub al-Ansari,' whereas it is rather Abu Ayyub al-'Ataki.
