Affan narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us: Abu Hazim narrated to us, from Sahl ibn Sa'd, who said: There was fighting among the Banu Amr ibn Awf, and it reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so he went to them after the noon prayer to reconcile between them, and he said: O Bilal, if the time for prayer comes and I have not returned, tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. He said: When the time for the afternoon prayer came, Bilal made the call to establish the prayer, then he told Abu Bakr, so he stepped forward to lead them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came after Abu Bakr had already entered the prayer, and when they saw him, they began to clap. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came making his way through the people until he stood behind Abu Bakr. He said: Abu Bakr, when he entered the prayer, would never turn around, but when he saw the clapping continuing without stopping, he turned and saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, behind him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured to him with his hand to continue. So Abu Bakr stood for a little while, praised Allah for that, then walked backwards. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished his prayer, he said: O Abu Bakr, what prevented you, when I gestured to you, from continuing? He said: Abu Bakr said: It was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in prayer. Then he said to the people: If something occurs to you during your prayer, let the men say 'Subhan Allah' and let the women clap.
