Abu al-Yaman and Ishaq ibn Isa told us, they said: Isma'il ibn Ayyash told us, from Abu Bakr ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Maryam, from Abu Sallam - Ishaq said "al-A'raj" - from al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib al-Kindi, that he sat with Ubadah ibn al-Samit, Abu al-Darda', and al-Harith ibn Mu'awiyah al-Kindi, and they recounted the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Abu al-Darda' said to Ubadah, "O Ubadah, the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in such-and-such a campaign concerning the matter of the fifths." So Ubadah said - Ishaq said in his account - that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in prayer during their campaign, by a camel from the spoils yet to be divided. When he had finished with the closing greeting, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood and took hold of a strand of wool between his two fingertips, and said, "This is from your spoils, and I have no share in it except my portion along with you, apart from the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So render up the thread and the needle, and whatever is greater than that or smaller, and do not embezzle, for embezzlement is fire and disgrace for its doers in this world and the Hereafter. Strive against the people for the sake of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, both the near and the far, and do not fear for the sake of Allah the blame of any blamer. Establish the limits of Allah both at home and while traveling, and strive in the path of Allah, for jihad is a mighty gate among the gates of Paradise, by which Allah, Blessed and Exalted, saves one from grief and anxiety."
