Waki' told us, Mahdi ibn Maymun told us, from Ghaylan ibn Jarir, from Abdullah ibn Ma'bad, from Abu Qatada: that a man asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about fasting the day of Arafah. He said: I hope that Allah will make it an expiation for the past year and the coming year. He said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say of a man who fasts all the time? He said: He neither fasted nor broke his fast - or: he did not fast and did not break his fast. He said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say of a man who fasts a day and breaks his fast a day? He said: That is the fasting of my brother David, peace be upon him. He said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say of a man who fasts a day and breaks his fast two days? He said: I wish I had the strength for that. He said: What do you say of a man who fasts two days and breaks his fast a day? He said: Who can bear that? He said: And he was asked about fasting the day of Ashura. He said: I hope that Allah will make it an expiation for the past year.
