حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ حَدَّثَنِي ثَوْبَانُ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ يَضْمَنُ لِي وَاحِدَةً وَأَضْمَنُ لَهُ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ لَا تَسْأَلْ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا قَالَ فَكَانَ سَوْطُ ثَوْبَانَ سَقَطَ وَهُوَ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ فَيُنِيخُ حَتَّى يَأْخُذَهُ وَمَا يَقُولُ لِأَحَدٍ نَاوِلْنِيهِ.

Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, from al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, Thawban the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) narrated to me, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who will guarantee me one thing and I will guarantee him Paradise?" I said: "I will, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do not ask people for anything." So Thawban's whip would fall while he was on his camel, and he would make it kneel down to pick it up and would not say to anyone: "Hand it to me."
