Abdullah told us, my father told me, Waki' told us, Ja'far ibn Burqan told us, from Habib ibn Abi Marzuq, from Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, from Abu Muslim al-Khawlani, who said: I came to the mosque of the people of Damascus, and there was a gathering in which were elders among the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and among them was a young man with dark eyes and gleaming teeth; whenever they differed about something, they referred it to the youth, the young man. I said to a companion of mine, "Who is this?" He said, "This is Mu'adh ibn Jabal." He said: I came in the evening but they had not gathered. He said: I went the next morning but they did not come. Then I went in the afternoon and found the young man praying beside a pillar. I performed a bowing then turned toward him. He said: he finished his prayer with the greeting, so I drew near him and said, "Indeed I love you for the sake of Allah." He said: he drew me toward him and said, "What did you say?" I said, "I love you for the sake of Allah." He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, relating from his Lord, saying: 'Those who love one another for the sake of Allah are upon pulpits of light in the shade of the Throne on a day when there is no shade but His shade.'" He said: I went out until I met Ubadah ibn al-Samit and mentioned to him the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Jabal. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, relating from his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, saying: 'My love has become due for those who love one another for My sake, and My love has become due for those who give to one another for My sake, and My love has become due for those who visit one another for My sake; and those who love one another for the sake of Allah are upon pulpits of light in the shade of the Throne on a day when there is no shade but His shade.'" Abdullah told us, my father told me, Ibrahim ibn Abi al-Abbas told us, Abu al-Malih told us, Habib ibn Abi Marzuq told us, from Ata', Abu Muslim told us, who said: I entered the mosque of Homs, and there was a gathering in which were thirty-two men among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and among them was a young man with dark eyes; and he mentioned the hadith.
