حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَمَرَتْهُ أُمُّهُ أَوْ أَبُوهُ أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا قَالَ شُعْبَةُ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَجَعَلَ عَلَيْهِ مِائَةَ مُحَرَّرٍ فَأَتَى أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ فَإِذَا هُوَ يُصَلِّي الضُّحَى يُطِيلُهَا وَصَلَّى مَا بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ أَوْفِ نَذْرَكَ وَبَرَّ وَالِدَيْكَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الْوَالِدُ أَوْسَطُ بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَحَافِظْ عَلَى الْوَالِدِ أَوْ اتْرُكْ.

Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib, who said: I heard Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami narrate that a man's mother, or his father, or both, commanded him - Shu'bah said, meaning that he should divorce his wife - and he was made [to swear] freeing a hundred slaves [as a penalty if he did not]. So he came to Abu al-Darda, and found him performing the extended Duha prayer and then he prayed between Dhuhr and Asr. He asked him, and Abu al-Darda said to him: 'Fulfill your vow and be dutiful to your parents. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "The parent is the middle gate of Paradise, so preserve the parent, or lose that gate."'
