Affan told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, Abu Nu'amah informed us, from al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, who said: I came to Medina wanting the stipend from Uthman ibn Affan, so I sat in a circle of the circles of Quraysh. Then a man came wearing tattered clothes, having wrapped a garment around his head, and said: "Give glad tidings to the hoarders of a branding on the foreheads, and a branding on the backs, and a branding on the sides." Then he withdrew to a pillar and prayed two rak'ahs behind it. I said: "Who is this?" It was said: "This is Abu Dharr." So I said to him: "What is this thing I heard you proclaiming?" He said: "I said nothing to them except something they had heard from their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said: "May Allah have mercy on you, I used to take the stipend from Umar — what do you think?" He said: "Take it, for today it provides assistance, but it is about to become a debt; so when it becomes a debt, cast it aside." Abu Kamil told us, Hammad told us, Abu Nu'amah al-Sa'di told us, and he mentioned it with its chain and its meaning, and did not mention except "something they had heard from their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." And I do not think Affan was correct except that he erred and went by the hadith of Abu al-Ashhab, because Affan added to it what was not with us.
