Affan told us, Abu al-Ashhab told us, Khulayd al-'Asari told us — Abu Jurayy said: "Where did you meet Khulayd?" He said: "I do not know" — from al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, who said: I was sitting with some people of Quraysh when Abu Dharr came until he was near them. He said: "Let the hoarders be given glad tidings of a branding from behind their backs which will come out from their bellies, and a branding from the back of their necks which will come out from their foreheads." Then he withdrew and sat down. I said: "Who is this?" It was said: "Abu Dharr." So I got up to him and said: "What is this thing I heard you proclaiming?" He said: "I said nothing to them except something they had already heard from their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said to him: "What do you say about this stipend?" He said: "Take it, for today it provides assistance; but if it becomes the price of your religion, then leave it."
