حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ وَعَفَّانُ الْمَعْنَى قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ بُرْدٍ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ عَفَّانُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا بُرْدٌ أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسَيٍّ عَنْ غُضَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَالَ نِعْمَ الْفَتَى غُضَيْفٌ فَلَقِيَهُ أَبُو ذَرٍّ فَقَالَ أَيْ أُخَيَّ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي قَالَ أَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنْتَ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَسْتَغْفِرَ لِي فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ نِعْمَ الْفَتَى غُضَيْفٌ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ضَرَبَ بِالْحَقِّ عَلَى لِسَانِ عُمَرَ وَقَلْبِهِ قَالَ عَفَّانُ عَلَى لِسَانِ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ بِهِ.

Yunus and Affan narrated to us -- the meaning being the same -- they said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Burd Abu al-Ala' -- Affan said: Burd Abu al-Ala' informed us -- from Ubadah ibn Nusayy, from Ghudayf ibn al-Harith, that he passed by Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: "What an excellent young man Ghudayf is." Then Abu Dharr met him and said: "My brother, ask forgiveness for me." He said: "You are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and you have more right to ask forgiveness for me." He said: "I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say, 'What an excellent young man Ghudayf is,' and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, has placed the truth upon the tongue and heart of Umar.'" Affan said: "upon the tongue of Umar, he speaks it."
