Al-Walid ibn Muslim and Muhammad ibn Mus'ab al-Qurqusani told us -- al-Walid said: al-Awza'i told me, and Muhammad said: al-Awza'i told us -- that al-Zuhri told him, from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that he disputed, he and al-Hurr ibn Qays ibn Hisn al-Fazari, about the companion of Moses, peace be upon him, who asked the way to meet him. Ibn 'Abbas said: "He is Khidr." Then Ubayy ibn Ka'b passed by them, and Ibn 'Abbas called out to him and said: "I have been disputing, my companion here and I, about the companion of Moses, peace be upon him, who asked the way to meet him -- have you heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mention his story?" He said: "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'While Moses, peace be upon him, was among a gathering of the Children of Israel, a man stood up to him and said: "Do you know anyone more knowledgeable than yourself?" He said: "No." So Allah, blessed and exalted is He, revealed to him: "Our servant Khidr." So Moses, peace be upon him, asked the way to meet him, and Allah, blessed and exalted is He, made the fish a sign for him. It was said to him: "When you lose the fish, go back, for you will meet him there."'" Ibn Mus'ab said in his hadith: So they camped at a place, and Moses, peace be upon him, said to his servant: "Bring us our morning meal; we have indeed suffered much fatigue from this journey of ours." It was at that point that the fish was lost. "So they retraced their steps, following the way they had come." Moses, peace be upon him, then followed the trace of the fish into the sea. He said: So what happened between the two of them was what Allah, blessed and exalted is He, related in His Book.
