Abu Mu'awiyah told us, al-A'mash told us, from Muslim, from Masruq, from Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, who said: I was a blacksmith, and I had a debt owed to me by al-'As ibn Wa'il. I came to him to demand payment, and he said: "No, by Allah, I will not pay you until you disbelieve in Muhammad." I said: "By Allah, I will not disbelieve in Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, until you die and are then resurrected." He said: "When I die and am resurrected, will I then come to you, having wealth and children there, and I will give you your due?" So Allah, blessed and exalted is He, revealed: "Have you seen the one who disbelieved in Our signs and said, 'I will surely be given wealth and children'" up to His saying, mighty and glorious is He, "and comes to Us alone."
