When the delegation of 'Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Madinah, he asked: "Who are the delegation?" They said: "Rabi'ah." He said: "Welcome to the delegation (or people), neither disgraced nor regretful." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you from a distant land, and between us and you is this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar, and we cannot come to you except in a sacred month. So command us with something that we can enter Paradise by and convey to those behind us." They also asked him about drinks. He commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things. He commanded them with faith in Allah and said: "Do you know what faith in Allah is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "The testimony that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying zakat, fasting Ramadan, and giving one-fifth of the war spoils." He forbade them from using gourds (dubba'), green-glazed jars (hantam), hollowed-out tree trunks (naqir), and pitch-coated vessels (muzaffat). He said: "Remember these and convey them to those behind you."
