Waki' told us, Sufyan told us — and Ibn Ja'far told us, Shu'bah told us — from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Zayd ibn Uqbah, from Samurah ibn Jundub, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: These requests (for money/favors) are a toil by which one of you scrapes at his own face — and Ibn Ja'far said 'scratches' by which a man wears down his face — unless he asks one in authority, or in a matter he cannot avoid.
