Abu Dawud al-Hafari told us: Sufyan told us, from Qays b. Muslim, from Tariq b. Shihab, who said: Abu Musa said: I came from Yemen, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "With what intention did you enter ihram?" I said, "With an intention like that of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him." He said, "Do you have a sacrificial animal with you?" I said, meaning no. So he commanded me, and I circled the House and went between al-Safa and al-Marwa, then I went to a woman from my people, and she combed my hair and washed it, then I ended my state of ihram. When the day of Tarwiya came, I entered ihram for Hajj. He said: I used to give this ruling to the people during the rule of Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah Almighty be pleased with them both. Then, while I was standing in the market of the pilgrimage season, a man came and whispered to me, saying, "You do not know what the Commander of the Faithful has introduced regarding the matter of the rites." I said, "O people, whoever we have given a ruling to about something, let him proceed cautiously, for the Commander of the Faithful is arriving among you, so follow him." He said: So he said to me, "If we take by the Book of Allah Almighty, it commands completion; and if we take by the practice of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he did not leave the state of ihram until he had sacrificed the offering."
