حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ لَقِيتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ كَمْ غَزَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ قُلْتُ كَمْ غَزَوْتَ أَنْتَ مَعَهُ قَالَ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ غَزْوَةً قَالَ فَقُلْتُ فَمَا أَوَّلُ غَزْوَةٍ غَزَا قَالَ ذَاتُ الْعُشَيْرِ أَوْ الْعُشَيْرَةِ.

Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I met Zayd ibn Arqam and said to him: How many campaigns did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, undertake? He said: Nineteen. I said: How many campaigns did you undertake with him? He said: Seventeen campaigns. I said: What was the first campaign he undertook? He said: Dhat al-Ushayr, or al-Ushayrah.
