حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ عَنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ إِنَّ بَنِي هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ اسْتَأْذَنُونِي فِي أَنْ يُنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَلَا آذَنُ لَهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَا آذَنُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَا آذَنُ فَإِنَّمَا ابْنَتِي بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يُرِيبُنِي مَا أَرَابَهَا وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا.

Hashim ibn al-Qasim told us, al-Layth - meaning Ibn Sa'd - told us, he said: Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Abi Mulayka told me, from al-Miswar ibn Makhrama, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was on the pulpit, saying, "Banu Hisham ibn al-Mughira have asked my permission to marry their daughter to Ali ibn Abi Talib, but I do not give them permission." Then he said, "I do not give permission." Then he said, "I do not give permission, for my daughter is a part of me; what disturbs her disturbs me, and what harms her harms me."
