حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ عَن مَيْمُونٍ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحَفْرِ الْخَنْدَقِ قَالَ وَعَرَضَ لَنَا صَخْرَةٌ فِي مَكَانٍ مِنْ الخَنْدَقِ لَا تَأْخُذُ فِيهَا الْمَعَاوِلُ قَالَ فَشَكَوْهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ عَوْفٌ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَضَعَ ثَوْبَهُ ثُمَّ هَبَطَ إِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ فَأَخَذَ الْمِعْوَلَ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَضَرَبَ ضَرْبَةً فَكَسَرَ ثُلُثَ الْحَجَرِ وَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِيحَ الشَّامِ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْصِرُ قُصُورَهَا الْحُمْرَ مِنْ مَكَانِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَرَبَ أُخْرَى فَكَسَرَ ثُلُثَ الْحَجَرِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِيحَ فَارِسَ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْصِرُ الْمَدَائِنَ وَأُبْصِرُ قَصْرَهَا الْأَبْيَضَ مِنْ مَكَانِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَرَبَ ضَرْبَةً أُخْرَى فَقَلَعَ بَقِيَّةَ الْحَجَرِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِيحَ الْيَمَنِ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْصِرُ أَبْوَابَ صَنْعَاءَ مِنْ مَكَانِي هَذَا حَدَّثَنَا هَوْذَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ عَن مَيْمُونٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَازِبٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَذَكَرَهُ.

Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: 'Awf told us, from Maymun Abu 'Abdillah, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered us to dig the trench. He said: A rock appeared before us at a spot in the trench that the pickaxes could not break. He said: They complained about it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came. 'Awf said: I think he put down his garment, then went down to the rock and took the pickaxe and said, In the name of Allah, and struck a blow, breaking a third of the stone, and said, Allah is greatest! I have been given the keys of Syria; by Allah, I can see its red castles from this very spot of mine. Then he said, In the name of Allah, and struck another blow, breaking another third of the stone, and said, Allah is greatest! I have been given the keys of Persia; by Allah, I can see the cities and I can see its white palace from this very spot of mine. Then he said, In the name of Allah, and struck another blow, dislodging the rest of the stone, and said, Allah is greatest! I have been given the keys of Yemen; by Allah, I can see the gates of Sana'a from this very spot of mine. Hawdhah told us: 'Awf told us, from Maymun, who said: al-Bara' ibn 'Azib al-Ansari informed me, and he mentioned it.
