Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Hashimi told us: Abu Bakr informed us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I said to al-Bara', "The man who charges against the polytheists—is he among those who cast themselves with their own hands into destruction?" He said, "No, because Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent His Messenger, who said, 'So fight in the way of Allah; you are not held responsible except for yourself.' That verse is only about spending [in charity]."
