It was narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Ja'far, who said: it was narrated to us by Shu'bah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Asbahani, from Abdullah ibn Ma'qil, who said: I sat with Ka'b ibn Ujrah while he was in the mosque, and I asked him about this verse: {then a ransom of fasting, charity, or sacrifice}. Ka'b said, "It was revealed concerning me. I had an ailment in my head, so I was carried to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with the lice falling onto my face. He said, 'I did not think the hardship had reached you to the extent I now see. Can you find a sheep?' I said, 'No.' So this verse was revealed: {then a ransom of fasting, charity, or sacrifice}." He said, "Fasting three days, or feeding six poor persons, half a sa' of food for each poor person." He said, "It was revealed concerning me specifically, but it applies to all of you generally." It was narrated to us by Affan, who said: it was narrated to us by Shu'bah, who said: it was narrated to us by Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Asbahani, who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Ma'qil say: I sat with Ka'b in this mosque, and he mentioned its substance. It was narrated to us by Bahz, who said: it was narrated to us by Shu'bah, who said: it was narrated to us by Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Asbahani, who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Ma'qil say: I sat with Ka'b ibn Ujrah in this mosque, and I asked him about this verse, and he mentioned the hadith, and said, "Feed six poor persons, each poor person half a sa' of food."
