Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ali ibn Zayd, from Abu Nadrah, who said: We came to Uthman ibn Abi al-'As on a Friday to present our copy of the Qur'an against his copy. When Friday came, he ordered us, so we performed the full ritual wash, then we were brought perfume and we perfumed ourselves, then we came to the mosque and sat with a man, and he told us about the Dajjal. Then Uthman ibn Abi al-'As came, and we stood up for him and sat down again, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'There will be for the Muslims three great cities: a city at the meeting-place of the two seas, a city at al-Hirah, and a city in Syria. The people will be struck with panic three times, and the Dajjal will emerge among the outskirts of the people and will rout those from the direction of the East. The first city he will come to will be the one at the meeting-place of the two seas, and its people will split into three groups: a group that says, "We will go out and examine him, to see what he is," a group that will join the bedouin, and a group that will join the city nearest to them. With the Dajjal will be seventy thousand followers wearing green-striped cloaks, and most of his followers will be Jews and women. Then he will come to the city next to it, and its people will split into three groups: a group that says, "We will go out and examine him, to see what he is," a group that will join the bedouin, and a group that will join the city nearest to them, in western Syria. The Muslims will withdraw to the mountain pass of Afiq, and they will send out a grazing herd of theirs, but their herd will be struck, and that will be very hard on them, and a severe famine and severe hardship will befall them, until one of them will burn the bowstring of his bow and eat it. While they are in that state, a caller will call out before dawn: "O people, help has come to you," three times, and some of them will say to one another, "That is indeed the voice of a well-fed man." Then Isa son of Maryam, peace be upon him, will descend at the time of the dawn prayer, and their commander will say to him: "Spirit of Allah, come forward and lead the prayer." He will say: "This nation has its own commanders, one over another." So their commander will come forward and lead the prayer. When he has finished his prayer, Isa will take his spear and go toward the Dajjal. When the Dajjal sees him, he will melt as lead melts, and Isa will place his spear between his shoulders and kill him, and his followers will be routed. On that day there will be nothing that can hide any of them, until even the tree will say, "O believer, here is a disbeliever," and the rock will say, "O believer, here is a disbeliever."' Affan narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us: Ali ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Abu Nadrah, who said: We came to Uthman ibn Abi al-'As to present our copy of the Qur'an against his copy, and he related the same meaning, except that he said: 'There will be nothing on that day that will conceal any of them,' and he said: 'He will melt as lead melts.'
