Yahya ibn Sa'id told us, from Jarir ibn Hazim, he said: Adi ibn Adi told us, he said: Raja' ibn Haywah and al-Urs ibn Amirah informed me, from his father Adi, he said: A man from Kindah called Imru' al-Qays ibn Abis disputed with a man from Hadramawt before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, over some land. He ruled that the Hadrami must produce evidence, but he had none, so he ruled that Imru' al-Qays must take an oath. The Hadrami said: If you allow him to take the oath, O Messenger of Allah, then by Allah — or by the Lord of the Ka'bah — my land is gone! So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever swears a false oath in order to seize thereby the property of his brother will meet Allah while He is angry with him. Raja' said: and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited: {Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price...}. Then Imru' al-Qays said: What is there for one who abandons it, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Paradise. He said: Then bear witness that I have abandoned all of it to him.
