حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَنَّهُ هُوَ وَالْفَضْلُ أَتَيَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُزَوِّجَهُمَا وَيَسْتَعْمِلَهُمَا عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ فَيُصِيبَانِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَوْسَاخُ النَّاسِ وَإِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِمُحَمَّدٍ وَلَا لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِمَحْمِيَةَ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ زَوِّجْ الْفَضْلَ وَقَالَ لِنَوْفَلِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ زَوِّجْ عَبْدَ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ وَقَالَ لِمَحْمِيَةَ بْنِ جَزْءٍ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَعْمِلُهُ عَلَى الْأَخْمَاسِ فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصْدِقُ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ الْخُمُسِ شَيْئًا لَمْ يُسَمِّهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَفِي أَوَّلِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا لَقِيَهُمَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَسْتَعْمِلُكُمَا فَقَالَا هَذَا حَسَدُكَ فَقَالَ أَنَا أَبُو حَسَنِ الْقَوْمِ لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّى أَنْظُرَ مَا يَرُدُّ عَلَيْكُمَا فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَاهُ سَكَتَ فَجَعَلَتْ زَيْنَبُ تُلَوِّحُ بِثَوْبِهَا أَنَّهُ فِي حَاجَتِكُمَا.

Yahya ibn Adam told us: Ibn al-Mubarak told us, from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal, from Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, that he and al-Fadl came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so that he might arrange marriages for them and employ them to collect the charity, so that they might benefit from that. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Indeed, this charity is only the impurities of the people's wealth, and it is not lawful for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Mahmiyah al-Zubaydi: Marry al-Fadl, and said to Nawfal ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib: Marry Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah, and said to Mahmiyah ibn Jaz' al-Zubaydi - and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to employ him over the fifths - so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered him to pay the dowry for the two of them from the fifth, a sum which Abdullah ibn al-Harith did not name. And at the beginning of this hadith, Ali met the two of them and said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, will not employ you two. They said: This is jealousy on your part. He said: I am Abu al-Hasan of the people; I will not leave until I see what he gives you in reply. So when they spoke to him, he was silent, and Zaynab began to wave with her garment, signalling that the matter was resolved in their favor.
