Ya'qub narrated to us: my father narrated to us from Ibn Ishaq: Yahya ibn 'Abbad ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us from his father 'Abbad, who said: When Mu'awiya came to us as a pilgrim, we came with him to Mecca. He led us in the noon prayer, two rak'ahs, then went to the House of Assembly (Dar al-Nadwa). He said: 'Uthman, when he used to complete the prayer upon arriving in Mecca, would pray the noon, afternoon, and final night prayer fully, four rak'ahs each; but when he went out to Mina and 'Arafat he would shorten the prayer, and when he had finished the Hajj and stayed at Mina he would complete the prayer until he left Mecca. So when he (Mu'awiya) led us in the noon prayer with two rak'ahs, Marwan ibn al-Hakam and 'Amr ibn 'Uthman rose to him and said: 'No one has faulted your cousin more severely than you have faulted him by this.' He said to them: 'What do you mean?' They said: 'Do you not know that he used to complete the prayer in Mecca?' He said to them: 'Woe to you both! Was there anything but what I have done? I prayed these two rak'ahs with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and with Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may Allah be well pleased with them both.' They said: 'But your cousin used to complete it, and your opposing him is indeed a fault.' So Mu'awiya went out for the 'Asr prayer and led us in it with four rak'ahs.
