He said: Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, who said: Jarir - meaning Ibn Hazim - narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an, who said: Abu Bakr ibn Anas ibn Malik narrated to me, who said: My father arrived from Syria as a delegate, and I was with him, and we met Mahmud ibn al-Rabi'. He related a hadith to my father about 'Itban ibn Malik. My father said: "O my son, memorize this hadith, for it is one of the treasures of hadith." When we returned to Madinah, we asked about him, and he was alive - an old blind man. We asked him about the hadith, and he said: "Yes. I lost my sight in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have lost my sight and cannot pray behind you; if only you would designate a place of prayer in my house so I could pray in it and take it as a place of prayer.' He said: 'Yes, I will come to you tomorrow.'" He said: When he prayed the next day, he turned to him and got up until he came to him. He said: "O 'Itban, where would you like me to designate for you?" So he indicated a place to him, and he designated it for him and prayed in it. Then he stayed or sat, and those of the Ansar around us heard of it and came until the house was filled with us. They mentioned the hypocrites and what they suffered from their harm and evil, until they settled the matter on a man among them called Malik ibn al-Dukhshum. They spoke of his condition, while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained silent. When they said much, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Does he not bear witness that there is no god but Allah?" When it was the third time, they said: "Indeed he does say it." He said: "By the One who sent me with truth, if he says it sincerely from his heart, the Fire will never consume him." They said: They had never been so pleased with anything as they were pleased with what he said.
