Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah was in the grand mosque with the people of Kufa around him. A man called Sa'id ibn Zayd came, and al-Mughirah greeted him and seated him at his feet on the raised platform. Then a man from Kufa came and began cursing. Sa'id asked: 'Who is this man cursing, O Mughirah?' He said: 'He is cursing Ali ibn Abi Talib.' Sa'id said: 'O Mughir ibn Shu'b! O Mughir ibn Shu'b!' — three times — 'Do I hear the Companions of the Messenger of Allah being cursed in your presence while you neither denounce it nor change it? I bear witness regarding the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with what my ears heard and my heart preserved — for I would not narrate a lie about him, as he would ask me about it when I meet him — that he said: Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Talhah is in Paradise, al-Zubayr is in Paradise, Abd al-Rahman is in Paradise, Sa'd ibn Malik is in Paradise, and the ninth of the believers is in Paradise. If I wished to name him, I would.' The people of the mosque clamored: 'O Companion of the Messenger of Allah, who is the ninth?' He said: 'You have implored me by Allah, and by Allah the Almighty — I am the ninth of the believers, and the Messenger of Allah is the tenth.' Then he followed that with an oath: 'By Allah, a battle in which a man gets his face dusty alongside the Messenger of Allah is better than the deeds of any of you, even if he were to live the lifespan of Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him).'
