Yunus told us: Layth, meaning Ibn Sa'd, told us, from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Usama ibn al-Had, from Amr, meaning Ibn Abi Amr, from al-Muttalib, from Umm Salama, who said: Abu Salama came to me one day from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "I heard a saying from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that pleased me greatly. He said: 'No calamity befalls any of the Muslims, and he says the istirja' at his calamity, then says: O Allah, reward me for my calamity and replace it for me with something better than it - except that this is done for him.'" Umm Salama said: So I memorized that from him. When Abu Salama died, I said the istirja' and said: "O Allah, reward me for my calamity and replace it for me with someone better than him." Then I said to myself: "From where will I get someone better than Abu Salama?" When my waiting period ended, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sought permission to enter while I was tanning a hide of mine. I washed my hands of the tanning bark and gave him permission. I placed for him a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber, and he sat on it and proposed marriage to me. When he finished speaking, I said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is not that you would not be desired by me, but I am a woman with intense jealousy, and I fear you would see something from me for which Allah would punish me. And I am a woman advanced in age, and I have dependents." He said: "As for the jealousy you mentioned, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will remove it from you. As for the age you mentioned, the same has befallen me as befell you. And as for the dependents you mentioned, your dependents are my dependents." She said: So I submitted to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married her. Umm Salama said: "Allah replaced Abu Salama for me with someone better than him - the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him."
